SUN & MERCURY ENTERS AQUARIUS
Before the Sun moves from earth to air, he squares off with Uranus in Aries for a disruptive shake up. This really exemplifies how the first two weeks of January felt like. Volatile and potent with a mix of grief and discipline. On Jan. 20th the Sun enters the second realm of Saturn into Aquarius. Fixing our time deep into winter for the north, summer in the south. Our great star does not do too well in Aquarius. The Sun is concerned with shining a light on our individual hearts’ desires. In Aquarius, a sign that prioritizes the unified collective body, can be quite far off from the ego’s need for the spotlight. Aquarius, an intellectual, prefers to search for truths and ideals through a recognition with the masses. Still traditionally ruled by Saturn, Aquarius can be resolute in his quest for reform. A positive mitigation for the Sun in detriment is that he is finally witnessed by a superior sextile from dignified Jupiter.
As always, Mercury is never too far away from the Sun. This perma-combust speedy planet also squares off with Uranus and then enters Aquarius on Jan. 24th. Overall, from here on forward, the Sun and Mercury are the only planets giving us some fixed-modality-vibes. This is a welcome change from all the cardinal-initiatory spirit and mutable-wavering mood for most of the month. Fixed signs help us finish and get to where we need to go.
VENUS IN SAGITTARIUS SQUARE NEPTUNE IN PISCES; & CONJUNCT JUPITER
Literally less than an hour before the Total Lunar Eclipse in Leo, the planet of beauty (Venus) exactly squares planet of boozy (Neptune) on Jan. 20th. This transit can feel sublime and otherworldly. It’s the stuff they sell us on romance films and falling lost in love. They’re both ruled by the lord of abundance Jupiter. And Venus’ co-presence with him really does bring on the party. But be careful of false prophets and proposals. When the haze and fog lifts and you take off your rose-coloured lenses, often the view you’re left with is a harsh contrast from the dream.
On Jan. 22nd however, the most auspicious configuration occurs when Venus conjoins Jupiter at 16˚ Sagittarius. This benefic conjunction is for good celebrations and merry love making. This can apply to all areas of our lives where we channel in more love and warmth to whatever it touches. Especially good for widening the breadth of your relationships and going to the far reaches of their potential. Go forth and multiply!
TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE AT 0˚ LEO
Taking the main stage for the last two weeks of January is a potent lunation on Jan. 20th 9:16pm PT/ Jan. 21st 12:16am ET. A Total Lunar Eclipse occurs when the Moon passes completely through the Earth’s dark shadow and takes on a rusty or blood red colour. This month’s lunation is also astronomically called a Supermoon due to its larger than usual appearance for being closer to the earth’s orbit. This event will be visible throughout most North and South America, the eastern Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, Europe, Middle East, most of Africa and northeastern Asia.
The beginning of the Leo Aquarius axis eclipses started back in Aug. 2016. This is the last time we’re having an eclipse in Leo. This pair will not be back for another 9 years, and the North Node won’t be returning in Leo for another 19 years. The Leo and Aquarius polarity deals with the tension of individuation and communion. They both desire recognition and feedback through different means. Leo, a fixed fire sign, deals with creative self-alignment. Aquarius, a fixed air sign, deals with collective kinship & liberation. Leo offers warm generosity, Aquarius provides strategies for moving humanity forward. Both offer a kind of endurance to their mission. In your birth charts, this axis pertains to your movement in and out of your ego. The ego is an interesting human reality. It’s necessary to nurture through gains of our life’s purpose, but also necessary to take its burden off to experience humility in our imperfection. This potent lunation is all expression. Not all Leos are extroverted (yes introverted Leos exist) but what’s true for all Leos is a need for feedback. All of our Sun signs rule this house in our chart (house that’s Leo). We integrate any significations of our Leo houses into our soul’s purpose. This lunation is getting support through a sign based Grand Fire Trine with Mars in Aries and Venus and Jupiter in Sagittarius.
Looking back in time, what has changed in your life since 2016? Specifically for this moment, look into the last Solar Eclipse at 18˚ Leo on Aug. 11, 2018 for clues on what’s culminating now. Remember, a Full Moon is always about the fulfillment and blossoming of what began in the New Moon. Overall, it’s an end of a kind of era. As we weave out of this story, a new narrative comes to life. What are you saying goodbye to?

MARS IN ARIES SQUARE SATURN IN CAPRICORN
This tense friction and frustrating combo has been building up ever since Mars entered his home sign on new year’s eve. On the same day as the eclipse on Jan. 21st, Mars exactly squares Saturn. If Mars is a sword, Saturn is a cement wall. These two together can cause irritation to the highest degree. Mars in Aries would like to charge at full speed while Saturn in Capricorn prefer to cautiously move forward. Both are traditionally challenging planets and for most of this month, we’ve likely had our share of snappy edges and seething rage. But you know, frustration can also be a friend if you stay curious. The slow influence that Saturn brings can give you a moment of pause and gives you space to ponder what Mars wants to speed ahead to. Be careful that you don’t cut out/off others out of spite, but also take care that you’re not imploding in anger. Release the energy somehow while also taking responsibility for your actions.
SUN CONJUNCTS MERCURY AT 8-9˚ IN AQUARIUS
In addition to the significations and themes noted on during the Sun and Mercury’s ingress into Aquarius, this degree of their monthly cazimi (or being in the heart of the Sun) is important to note. 9-10˚in Aquarius were the same degrees of Mars’ previous retrograde on Oct. 16, 2018. I recommend looking back around the fall season to remember what transpired then. The conflicts that may have transpired back in Oct. 2018 may produce some clarity now. This conjunction can help you see more clearly and in Aquarius awards you more objectivity and honesty.
SATURN IN CAPRICORN SEXTILES NEPTUNE IN PISCES BOTH AT 14˚
The sobering flow of the goddess of consequence (Saturn) helps give form to our spiritual lives. This is the first of three sextiles between these two planets this year. What we experience as usually ambiguous can start to feel more tangible. This combo is about having both faith and ability to make our dreams real. If your dreams can find a vessel with which to hold all its contents, this transit provides the framework to bring them to life. Neptune is the ethereal wind that brings shivers down our spine (Saturn). Without the cushion of reality, without the back bone to put in effort, much of our wishful prayers just become spiritual bypassing. The kind where you reject “lower vibrations” without examining your own malodorous aura. Here, we get a chance to juxtapose our fantasies to what is possible within the dimension you live in. It’s a sobering ascension to what it truly means to be awake. And to be awake is to hold both love and suffering in our hands knowing that our capacity to feel everything enables us to stay present for all the joy and the sorrow.
On Joy & Sorrow (Excerpt from The Prophet by Khalil Gibran)
Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.
And how else can it be?
The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.
An so, as we depart from an old story, we slowly make way for a new one.

Your inner world has likely experienced immense shifts the past two years. You’ve had to face up and confront some of your unconscious underlining. This is the moment of generously sharing the wealth of your experiences to anyone who listens. And on the same breath, this is the juncture to release them all to the wind. You are embodying a special kind of abundance this year and if anyone knows the comfort of being at a fork in the road, it’s you. “Oh! The places you’ll go!” (Dr. Seuss).

What of life’s impermanence have you learned to celebrate? What of sharing and receiving with others have helped you warm up to life? Since 2017 you’ve been on a quest to interrogating the profundity of all the losses you’ve endured. Bereavement is the act of experiencing your sorrow. It is time to finish up projects and walk away from ones no longer aligned to where you’re headed. The curtain call is near.
